Ruth Boorkman was active in civic, educational and cultural organizations since coming to Long Beach in 1949, with her husband, Charles J. (Charlie) Boorkman. Born in Downers Grove, IL July 1, 1912 to George J. Reuss and Mary Belle (Gorrie), she was raised in Aurora, IL. She graduated from Aurora College and did graduate work in library science at the University of Illinois and USC. She was a librarian in public, college and university libraries in California, Illinois, Ohio, and with the Long Beach Unified School District.
